Caring For Your Teeth After Root Canal

A root canal is a common dental procedure that treats serious infections in the tooth root. The root canal procedure involves removing the infected pulp and nerves and then filling in the space with medicated dental materials.

The root canal procedure is often recommended when infection or decay reaches the root of the tooth. Without treatment, the infection can spread to the tooth’s surrounding tissues and jawbone.

Here are some aftercare tips you need to follow in case you had a root canal:

No Smoking

Cigarette smoking greatly increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Immediately after your root canal, it is in your best interest to avoid smoking. If you smoke, please quit. The chemicals in cigarettes and other forms of tobacco can greatly increase the risk of complications during any oral surgery, including your root canal.

Avoid Chewing On the Affected Side

After your root canal, you should wait to eat until your numbness wears off. Once it does, you will be able to chew normally again. However, you should avoid chewing on the affected side. Otherwise, the tooth may crack or fracture. A fractured tooth can be very painful, and you will need to have it repaired.

Avoid Crunchy Foods

After your root canal, it’s best to avoid crunchy foods, such as chips, nuts, and popcorn. These foods will irritate the treated area. Instead, focus on soft foods, such as yogurt, smoothies, and soup.

Rinse Mouth with Saltwater

You can rinse your mouth with a mixture of 1⁄4 teaspoon (0.5 mL) of salt in 1 cup (250 mL) of warm water. Don’t swallow this saltwater mix.

Saltwater rinses help remove food particles and bacteria from your mouth following the procedure. It’s normal for your gums, tooth, and tongue to be sore and swollen for several days following the procedure.

Avoid Straws

If you’re planning to have a root canal, you should avoid straws. The suction created by drinking with a straw may dislodge a filling or crown.

Brush and Floss Teeth

You won’t be able to brush and floss your teeth as thoroughly as usual. Take extra care to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth, and floss gently.

After your root canal, you may experience sensitivity, especially when eating hot or cold foods. If this persists, talk to your dentist about adapting your diet.

Use an Antiseptic Mouthwash

The antiseptic mouthwash will help to keep the area clean. Brush your teeth like normal but avoid brushing the area that was treated. You should also avoid rinsing with mouthwash that has an acidic pH.

Notify Your Dentist In Case of any Concerns

Once your root canal is complete, your dentist will prescribe over-the-counter pain medication and/or antibiotics. You may be sore for a few days after the root canal, and over-the-counter pain medication can help.

The pain in your tooth should subside after the first few days. If you are still experiencing pain after a few days, make sure you call your dentist.
